American suburbia in movies/TV shows

In text 4, Sloane Crosley writes that "there was a lot of suburbia in the movies during the 80s and the 90s". This is also true today - lots of today's TV shows or movies include characters living in suburban areas.

1) Find one movie or TV show that is situated in a suburban area. Find out information about the show/movie - who are the characters? What are the surroundings like? How are they described? Is it a life of golf clubs and summer camps and car washing?

Write your answers in the comment box of this blog post. Try to include some vocabulary from the text. Remember to also include your name!

2) Write 5 sentences where you use a word from the vocabulary list in text 4. Include your name

  1. Home alone, located in suburbs, surrounded by other houses, main character is a boy named Kevin. Only thing that i can say about stereotypes is that the house is big, and the yard is big also.

  2. The only even remotely recent show or movie I could come up with was Modern family and the (not particurarly good) comedy is derived from the families being odd and not stereotypical but there are some stereotypical stuff like car washing.

  6. I picked a show called "Leave it to Beaver" which is an American comedy show that aired in the 1950s. The show is about a family called the Cleavers. The main character is a young boy called Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver. The other characters are his parents June and Ward Cleaver and his older brother Wally Cleaver. The family lives in a three story house in a quiet but eventful suburbia. Everyone seems to know everyone in the neighbourhood and nothing stays as a secret for long. The family is described as a normal and simple family. The boys are always causing trouble and the parents are trying to raise their children to be honourable members of society. Normal activities of the family include but are not limited to; picnics, playing tennis together and having dinner parties for the neighbours. Also BBQs are very common.
The show has an iconic status in the US and the Cleavers were an example of an idealised family in the mid-20th century. Still to this day June Cleaver is exemplified as the stereotypical perfect housewife and a mother in the US. It's almost like a joke these days...
